Reverb10 Challenge: Future Self

January 4, 2011

December 21st, Jenny Blake of Life After College: The Complete Guide to Getting What You Want authored the Reverb10 Challenge prompt.  She asked,

Future self. Imagine yourself five years from now. What advice would you give your current self for the year ahead? (Bonus: Write a note to yourself 10 years ago. What would you tell your younger self?)

Five years from now, I will be finishing up my work to go up for tenure and thinking about having kids.  I would tell my 29 year old self to do the following…

Dear 10 years ago me,

Everything will be okay.  Stop trying so hard to impress and live in everyone else’s world.  You have your own world to live in.  Keep working on creating your own niche in the world.  It will happen.  Stop trying to hang onto toxic relationships in hopes that it will change into something worth holding onto.  And seriously Nellie, you are worth more than you think.  Believe in yourself and continue to grow.  Don’t let the haters take you down.  You are stronger than that… and you will get even stronger.  You should know that you are loved.  Don’t worry, one day you will learn, and you will continue to learn, grown, and change for the rest of your life.

You must love yourself first before the love of your life will come into your life.  You don’t yet understand that you’re worth that kind of love, but you will learn.  I guarantee it.  Keep making mistakes and learning from them.  It will make you the woman that you need to become.

Love,

10 years later me
